Delhi Rises to Toxic Haze Post Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" range.
Extremely High Air Quality Levels
Several parts of Delhi showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy threshold established by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times above acceptable standards.
Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Changes
Since 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that covers the capital as the cold season sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the newly elected local government petitioned the judicial authority to seek a easing of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Legal Ruling and Enforcement
Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, the court complied with the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated periods throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Many air quality sensors throughout Delhi showed air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Regional Consequences
The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming declining air quality in their urban centers on contaminants originating in across the border following the events.
Persistent Environmental Problem
The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.
During celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous particles in the environment has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the worst records ever recorded in China's capital, which was once regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.
Multiple Contamination Sources
The situation in the city is caused by a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.
In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as colder air sets in.
Health and Financial Impact
The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the capital region is significant, according to numerous studies.
This pollution results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can even lead to cancer.
The pollution is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 untimely fatalities per year in the city.
