An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been told to avoid discussing classified information in any vehicles.
Security Guidance for Defence Staff
During a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Defence Context
This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This wider defence situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in every areas of official activities, from transport use to communication habits.
